Description:The Sonographer uses high frequency sound waves to produce medical images of the human body for diagnosis and treatment.
Duties: Clinical Practice
  • Assess patient relative to requested procedure by collecting pertinent data about the patient and the procedure.
  • Analyzes collected data and uses professional judgment to select the most appropriate and cost-effective method for completing the requested procedure.
  • Educates the patient, family, and other healthcare providers as appropriate regarding the requested procedure.
  • Prepares patient both physically and emotionally prior to examination, explaining procedures to allay patient fears
  • Documents information about patient care and Radiologic services provided.
  • Assists physician with sterile procedures, such as image guided biopsies, drainage procedures, etc.

    Image Production
  • Produces medical images to meet standards established in department protocols. Uses independent judgment and skills to position patients in order to obtain quality exams.
  • Alters positioning of patient and/or manipulates the transducer as required by patient condition to accurately image the desired anatomical structure(s) and obtain the image(s) necessary to produce a comprehensive examination based on the suspected pathology.
  • Produces hard-copy images and/or digitally archived images for use in patient care.

    Equipment Operation
  • Operates medical ultrasound equipment. Selects appropriate transducers and modifies technical factors such as depth, power, gain, and focal zones to produce optimal images.
  • Operates various computer systems.

    Image Evaluation
  • Ensures images are identified with appropriate patient and examination identification information.
  • Verifies that area of interest has been imaged according to standard department protocols.
  • Differentiates between artifacts and normal pathological processes.
  • Determines need for repeat or additional images, and the technical factor or patient positioning adjustments required to correct image/examination deficiencies.
  • Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy (topical and cross-sectional), physiology, and pathology.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound physics and the biological effects of acoustic energy.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound image production and processing.
  • Skill in performing venipuncture and maintaining IV patency.
  • Skill in communicating with patients of all ages to explain procedures and obtain patient cooperation in completing procedures.
  • Ability to accurately position patients, manipulate transducers, and adjust imaging parameters.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to exam protocols and guidelines.
  • Experience to recognize when altering exam protocols is necessary to achieve desired imaging results.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in highly stressful emergency situations when a patient’s life is in jeopardy.

    Minimum Position Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited college or school of Radiologic Technology or equivalent required.
  • Registered (or registry eligible) as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) (if registry eligible, must obtain RDMS certification within 12 months of employment. If graduate of an accredited college or school of Radiologic Technology must also have certification and current registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a radiographer AND certification and current registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a sonographer. For Cardiovascular Services – Must be registered (or registry eligible) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) (if registry eligible, must obtain RDCS or RVT certification within 12 months of employment).
  • Current CPR Certification required.
