| Description: | Serves as a medical interpreter for patients, families and staff in consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation modes. Relays medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Assists with written translations assigned by the coordinator. Understands and abides by all published Standards of Practice and Codes or Ethics for Medical Interpreters. Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and staff. |
| Duties: | Interpretation Services
Enables direct communication between patients, family and staff by interpreting information between all parties.
Maintains professional distance and integrity.
Remains calm and impartial during conflict, clarifies instructions and follow up in a diplomatic, effective manner.
Manages spatial configuration and flow of communication.
Assess and address potential areas of discomfort for the patient (age, gender of interpreter, etc).
Recognizes the complexity of the communication encounter, including linguistic Selects appropriate mode of interpretation for each situation.
Explains the role of the interpreter to patient, family, staff when appropriate.
Self corrects, understands own linguistic limitations, seeks clarification and accepts correction.
Picks up cues from others regarding level of understanding and/or need for clarification.
Flexible and adaptable to the needs of patients, families, staff and organization.
Translation Services
Strong writing skills and understanding of translation process.
Completes assigned translations in a timely manner.
Other Responsibilities
Understands language as an expression of culture.
Recognizes the underlying assumptions of each party about medicine, the encounter, illness, etc.
Uses this understanding to empower the patient, family, staff to better understand each other.
Intervenes as intercultural mediator when communication is compromised by culture-bound messages.
Avoids generalizations and stereotyping; uses culturally appropriate behavior.
Able to choose appropriate time to clarify or interject by respecting the goals of each encounter.
Aware of own personal values, beliefs and cultural characteristics which may be a source of conflict or discomfort in certain situations.
Able to acknowledge these conflicts and/or withdraw from encounters when these interfere with successful interpretation.
Other duties as assigned.

| Qualifications: | Advanced level of fluency in English and Spanish, both oral and written.
Must be able to work in consecutive mode as well as sight translate into, and from working languages. Highest degree of accuracy with interpreting in these modes.
Knowledge and working ability with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Knowledge of cultural backgrounds, regional accents and linguistic styles of the patients that will be served.
Associate degree required.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Previous medical interpreting experience preferred.
Must Pass Medical Interpreter Competency Examination or be willing to take the exam.
Must obtain National Certification when available.
Advanced level of fluency in English and Spanish, both oral and written.
Must be able to interpret in consecutive move and sight translations and have a strong medical vocabulary. |
