Description:The Radiologist Facilitator works primarily in a support role to the diagnostic radiologists, performing tasks which permit the radiologists to focus increased effort on image interpretation and direct patient care activities. Tasks appropriate for the Radiologist Facilitator are those administrative and clerical tasks that are directly associated with the radiologist performing image interpretation and direct patient care activities. Tasks which are beyond the scope of the Radiologist Facilitator are those clerical and administrative tasks associated with the operation of the radiologists’ business operations (licensing, credentialing, billing, CME, etc.), which are provided by the administrative staff of the radiology group.
Duties:Clerical and Administrative Support Activities
  • Work with radiologist and radiology department staff to help identify and prioritize studies to be read.
  • Ensure requisitions and comparison images are available, as required. If required comparison images are not available on the PACS, assist the radiologist in obtaining them before the current images are interpreted by:
  • Working with the radiology office staff to locate and retrieve hard copy images in our archives, or
  • Personally retrieving hard copy images from our archives, or
  • Assisting the radiologists in obtaining available electronic images from other providers.
  • Serve as a liaison between the radiologist and the imaging modalities to ensure all information needed by the radiologist is available at the time the radiologist interprets the study.
  • Work with the radiologist facilitator on the opposite campus to manage cross-campus information needs.
  • Monitor radiologist workload backlog throughout the shift; identify potentially excessive backlog to the radiologist, and assist in securing assistance with clearing the backlog (from radiologist on the opposite campus, a radiologist who can read from home, and/or Diana contract radiologists) as directed by the radiologist on-duty.

    Assist the radiologist with RIS, PACS, and dictating system functions to help ensure all studies are interpreted in a timely manner.

    Assist with delivery of STAT results by performing tasks such as:
  • Calling negative test results to the ER, inpatient unit, or referring physician.
  • Placing phone calls to the ER, inpatient unit, or referring physicians, and getting the appropriate person on the line for the radiologist to delivery
  • Faxing preliminary result forms for the radiologist, and placing follow-up calls to let the receiving party know when results have been faxed.

    Answer incoming telephone calls and overhead pages for radiologists.
  • Identify the caller’s need.
  • Personally handle the call, if possible.
  • Direct the call/page to the most appropriate radiologist (or other person) if unable to personally address the caller’s need.
  • Take and relay messages to the radiologist, as appropriate.

  • Place telephone calls for the radiologist to others involved in the care and treatment of patients (other physicians, other hospital staff, etc).
  • Review the daily Unsigned Report List (emailed to you from the Radiology Division Secretary). Remind the radiologists working on your campus, who have reports showing on the list, to sign their reports.
  • Manage the process for getting images which are overdue for interpretation (as identified by the RIS Unread Exams List0 interpreted by the appropriate radiologist.
  • Act as a liaison between the Radiology Transcription staff and the radiologists to make report corrections, report addenda, and to clear reports placed “on-hold” by transcriptionists.
  • Work with the Tumor Board representative(s) to ensure images are available for review by the assigned radiologist before the weekly Tumor Board meeting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Support Staff Supervisor, the Radiology Office Manager, the Radiology Operations Manager, or the Radiology Division Director.
  • Qualifications:
  • Prior healthcare experience preferred.
  • Skill in communicating with staff (support, technical, professional staff) at all levels.
  • Ability to learn and use various computer systems.
  • Ability to operate multi-line telephone system, copiers, fax machines and other general office equipment.
  • Ability to multitask and follow-up on assignments with little supervision.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • Current CPR required.
