Pharmacy Technician I

Description:Under the supervision of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician I performs multiple tasks related to preparing, dispensing, admixture compounding, delivering, and charging medications.
Duties:General Daily Operations
  • Routes medication orders and requisitions to the appropriate area of the department for processing.
  • Packages drugs for unit dose dispensing.
  • Processes admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Fills, charges, and delivers floor stock items, including those provided via exchange boxes or carts.
  • Fills medications provided via automated dispensing machines; provides assistance to patient care areas with issues related to dispensing machines.
  • Assists pharmacist with processing.

    Specialized Operations
  • Enters orders for intravenous admixtures, including Chemotherapy and TPNs, into the computer.
  • Prepares the IV admixture area for work, including restocking and reordering drugs, IV’s, and supplies, cleaning laminar flow hoods, and filing and record keeping related to IV service.
  • Compounds IV admixtures, TPN/PPN, chemotherapy, and other specialized sterile preparations.
  • Assists the pharmacist with entering and filling employee prescriptions and IV order entry.
  • Qualifications:
  • Some pharmacy experience is required.
  • Has working knowledge of applicable functions of the pharmacy computer system.
  • Has thorough knowledge of daily functions of automated dispensing machines.
  • Has working knowledge of the compounding pumps utilized in the admixture area.
  • Has knowledge of sterile technique, appropriate utilization of a laminar flow hood, and special technique and handling requirements of IV chemotherapy agents.
  • Has the ability to read medical orders.
  • Has a thorough knowledge of unit dose process.
  • Possesses problem-solving skills
  • Supervisory experience preferred (if Home Healthcare Agency).

    Minimum Position Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred (if Home Healthcare Agency).
  • Must obtain certification within 12 months of employment or promotion to this level in order to retain position.
